51scxqn7bwL._SS500_…as a kid growing up and shuffling through various public schools, i was exposed to the same urban myths and lurid stories that appealed to the morbidity of thirteen year olds. bloody mary, chupacabra’s, the night stalker and so forth peppered our conversations like trained mccaws repeat oft heard phrases. of course the donner party tragedy was bandied about hollowly, all speculation but no real facts behind it. just wildly distorted “truths” passed on from older siblings, a distracted parent or an irritated teacher. what i knew of the donner party was simple: they got lost, snowed in and began to eat each other. end of story. fast forward thirty years and without it even being on my mind, i manage to find a book that reveals so much about the tragedy and the forces that put it into play. written by daniel james brown, “the indifferent stars above” comes across with so much heart.

the author didn’t set about writing another dry, factoid chronology and nor did he attempt to write some creepy historical novel replete with fictional dialog. instead he chose a young woman from the party close in age to his own daughter and full of the dreams of starting a new life with a loving young husband in the bargain. he traced sarah graves from her home in illinois and sketched out a picture full of life, family and community which breathed life into a young bride who would in the end, withstand the horrors of the donner tragedy. tragedy doesn’t begin to do justice for these series of events which were doomed from the very beginning. rather than list all of the gory details, he introduces the characters who take advantage of the donners, the graves and other emigrants and who through their own greed and gross negligence, seal their doom. he speaks about the mountain men and trappers who lent their help to so many lost emigrants and he describes the native american tribes who were exploited and exploited others in turn. throughout the recounting gleaned from historical reference and old fashioned sleuthing, brown weaves in medical information, historical comparisons and relevant facts to give the story a context to which we can relate. this in turn enables the reader to better understand the hard, often brutal circumstances, the cultural and psychological traits, durability, strengths and frailties of the individuals involved. i was riveted!

what i took away was the perspective their experience put my own life into. it was definitely a look into an extinct way of life that nothing in the modern western civilization could prepare you for. we are surrounded by so many creature comforts and conveniences, our modern plumbing, gps, computers, internet, medicines and so forth that have cocooned us in selfish narcissism. i believe the author said it best as he contrasted the stark reality of what was happening to sarah and the rest of the donner party with the industrial revolution and then modern advances that were happening on the east coast. he said that basically, the further the party went west, the further back in time they traveled leaving behind all of the modern conveniences that were transpiring in civilized cities. that their situation and the tools at their disposal was in comparison to the stone age. what really stung was knowing that so much of it could have been prevented but for the predatory greed of others and their own naïvete.

that said, of course the gory details were fascinating too! every five to ten minutes i kept interrupting my partner with groans of “oh no!” and “oh, my god”. at every turn it seemed that whatever you thought was bad could be topped with something worse. i’ve never seen so many disasters compounded and by the end of course, i’m wondering why they had to go all the way out to california in the first place when things were just swell in illinois. you’d have to know a thing or two about the pioneer spirit but for most of us, that means backpacking through vietnam or a holiday trek through india. the one thing that i can attest to, having worked in a morgue, was the comment on the smell of cooked human flesh. for those who turn up their noses and exclaim, ‘i could never’, i can attest to the fact that it does indeed smell like any other juicy roast or charbroiled burger you may have consumed during your lifetime. a comparison so certain that finally turned me to vegetarianism.

for someone who knew of the donner party without really knowing the true saga behind it, i had to say this was the best book to go with. not dry and removed, nor is it sentimental in the telling but it does pull at your heart to see the sadness of the whole incident laid bare. brown takes you across dry prairies, over baking salt flats and up sheer basalt cliffs and manages to educate his readers all without any interruption to the flow of the tale. i do have to quote mary roach from the new york times sunday book review: “One of his (brown’s) goals is to restore dignity to the Donner emigrants, whose courage and decency have, over the years, taken a back seat to their menu.” a must read for lovers of american history and dare i say, tragedies…

feat-libr-300px._V251249390_…and i found it! i just took the plunge and spontaneously purchased the kindle 2.0 from amazon and it has to be the best thing i’ve done for myself in so long. forget clothing, shoes or baubles. i’ve managed to find something to fuel my greatest passion, reading. i can plow through the average novel in less than two days and with that comes the inevitable trip back to the bookstore. because of quantities, variety and so forth, usually that dictates barnes and noble which i loathe. besides being a conglomerate chain, which really, is just par for the course in a capitalistic, consumer fueled society, i really can’t handle being among the swarm of others who are also flocking there to peruse the periodicals, thumb through the bestsellers, cruising for potential pick ups or simply converge to chat over coffee. you literally have to crawl over each other and it’s impossible to relax and seriously consider the next purchase. traveling also quickly adds up as i usually purchase a book to read between say, here and new york and by the time i arrive, i’m finished or almost so and need to purchase another book for the return trip. another issue is the fact that i burn through books so quickly and so dread the trip to the local b+n that i’m often without and gravitate towards the tube instead where i pick up new viewing habits that i didn’t even know i had! hello “millionaire matchmaker”! i could shop online but the shipping rates are not cute, nor is the 5-7 day delivery time or delivery coordination. what’s a girl to do?

i’d heard about the previous kindle and just put it out of my mind as a fluke. i was discussing the purchase of more books when my partner remarked on the shortage of storage space in our loft. already packed with furniture (in my view), the idea of yet another bookcase to contain the mounting stacks was not appealing. despite our purging neglected odd novels and such, we still have more than our share of books. my finger hovered above the purchase button when i finally decided to take a gander at the kindle to see what the fuss was all about. well, of course amazons reviews were nothing short of glowing and, no fool am i, i also reviewed it through cnet and a couple of e-reader sites. so far so good but what nailed it for me, was the, wait for it…instant gratification of being able to purchased said e-books on the cheap and, gasp, download them in 15 seconds for free! sold! emptied basket of paper books and loaded it instead with kindle 2.0 and a chic, fuchsia leather cover. no 5-7 day delivery bullshit for me, oh no! 3 days was grueling enough and when i thought i could finally stand it no longer, it arrived a day early! 8O

now, the goods! of course during the 3 day wait, i had prowled through “the stacks” so to speak and had downloaded roughly 13 samples to read. the beauty of shopping for any book is reading the first few pages or so and waiting for “the grab”. hard to do in a congested bookstore and amazon does it smartly by allowing you to download the free sample and then purchase with an easy one click if you care to read more. hello, hooked! by the time my kindle arrived, i’d plugged it in to charge, turned on the free whispernet wireless and lo and behold, said samples automatically appeared on my home screen. within 10 minutes, i’d read my first sample of “a reliable wife” by robert goolrick, purchased and downloaded the rest. joy! what a delight that was for my first e-book and by the evening of the next day, i was finished and anticipating the next (which i purchased while in route to the nucleus gallery in alhambra. i wasn’t driving!)

the beauty of this little device is my being able to carry multiple books, purchase anytime and anywhere with free download and back up and knowing that i won’t be depleting any more forests in my quest for the next literary fix. (i mean really, have you seen the twilight series fortress dominating the front tables of your local b+n? i’ve heard of siblings having their own copies because neither wants to wait for the other to finish before taking their turn! the series wasn’t that good) the built in dictionary that allows you to toggle to a word and instantly get the meaning, the ability to highlight passages and make notes and remarks, the built in browser, email and experimental “read to me” feature makes my reading experience far more interactive and even deeper to a certain extent. the price was steep but if you’re a bookworm, consider it an investment. suddenly like the mini or the ipod, i begin to notice others who have one and love to talk to other book lovers when they spot me with mine. the only downside is there is nowhere for skeptical consumers to go and take a test drive as with an apple store but i took the plunge anyway and emerged a huge fan! :D

wearable art…

necklace…has become my solace in this time of economic uncertainty. my squeeze and i like to indulge in artistic purchases as inspiration for our own creative endeavors and jewelry has become an area which i have been paying more attention to. there are trends which follow the season in lengths, color, size, etc. and then there are pieces that you make a deeply personal connection with that defy the containment of the jewel du jour. i have found several which have made their way into my collection. earlier in march i went to the dupont for the yves st. laurent retrospective and found inspiration not only in his work but also in this handmade beauty by dori csengeri. each piece is unique with embroidered silk cords, glass beads, swarovsky crystals and semi precious stones. she has a background in textile design and each piece lays like an article of clothing. she bases her collections on various sources of inspiration and in this case, gustav klimt. necklace2kind of appropriate considering the breadth of the ysl exhibit. my next piece is also the creation of a textile designer by the name of fiona paxton. her pieces are flapper inspired necklaces which in their origins, took native american beadwork as creative direction. each work is handmade and mounted on mesh for comfort. the result is a fluid necklace that sets off even the simplest outfits. the next piece is by a lesser known young artisan who is quickly making a name for herself by producing progressive minded pieces using conflict free precious stones. i found belle brooke on the artwalk last night in downtown los angeles and was struck by how singular her creations are. winner of the 2008 mort abeleson new designer award, this sterling silver canoe ring is set with champagne diamonds and accented with aquamarine. the photo does not begin to do it justice as my photograpic skills are abysmal but if you click on any of the images, it will take you to sites where professional shots of similar pieces are ringavailable. this ring is large with a high bling factor and despite how it looks, it only sits on one finger. having played with it a bit, i found it could live in several different collections from edgy rocker chic to clean, avant garde elegance. the deal breaker was her use of conflict free gems which means no blood was shed resulting in guilt free pleasure. definitely worth reading is the thoughtful artistic statement she wrote withnecklace3 regards to her work. she was one of several artists displaying her work last night but above all, she shone the brightest. the final piece was a gift from my squeeze on his return from australia. pamela dean is a sydney based designer who focuses on sculptural necklaces of semi-precious stones and silver. her background as an exhibited artist is evident in her handling of the stones and their balance in asymmetrical placement. again, my photo of this all white necklace simply can’t capture the faceted cuts of the moonstone and white turquoise nor the carved scarab accent found on one of the stones. all in all, i’m very impressed with what i’ve been finding as of late, especially in my own backyard.

…and i am listening to the cocteau twins while my boyfriend sleeps. i have a mug of peppermint tea in hand and my rabbit and cat are in full nocturnal mode and i feel the deepest sense of calm and peace rush over me. i am so grateful for what i have. i’m grateful for the two little creatures who make so much of nothing but therein make me realise that “nothing” is so much. my cranky little cancer is sleeping and in so many ways, despite his sensitivity there are times that i sense that my feelings are soooo much more. and maybe that is hormones or whatever, but i do feel so full right now and at rest. i wish everyone this restfulness. i had it when i lived in a 400 square foot place with nothing but the bare minimum so i know you can have it if you slow down enough to see it. tonight, i am most grateful and i hope to keep that gratitude at heart. i hope that others who are experiencing that same restfullness can project it onto everyone else and so i intend to spend the rest of the evening doing just that…..

drool!…

drew_side_full_sizethis is just a smattering of what’s being offered up at omelle luxury footwear. as if i didn’t have enough to lust over as it is! thanks, daily candy!

sexo y violencia…

cassandro_01vl-copy1…and a little goes a long way! last weeks pre-valentine’s day mosh of luchadores and busty burlesque babes was just the jolt i needed. brought to you by “el jimador” king of tequilas, this show is jam packed with l.a.’s finest masked wrestlers. home to legendary greats like el chupacabra, dirty sanchez, the poubelle twins and my personal fave, cassandro, who wrestles in drag, the grand mayan theatre is nestled in the piss stained streets of downtown l.a. come early because you’ll want to bear witness to their grand arrival via beautifully restored vintage cars. no show would be complete without emcee talent to call the matches and in this case, we’ve hit the motherlode. there is blaine capatch, patton oswalt (king of queens) and the illustrious tom kenny, the man behind spongebob squarepants. got your attention now? every season brings a freshly choreographedchupacabra622-copy1 match themed for the season (when suitable). boys vs boys, girls vs girls, boys vs girls (it has happened with the poubelle twins, those vicious little minx!), chickens on midgets and although i’m pretty p.c., i’m not opposed to the occasional midget toss at all! in between the matches you’re treated to burlesque feats compliments of lucy fur, karie and roky roulette who’sds_rr2-copy1 striptease via pogo stick is nothing short of masterful bringing down the house each time! ringside seats are where it’s at as it puts you close to all the eye poppin’ action (not to mention the bar!). spanish covers of popular tunes accompany the acts and the comedy throughout the acts is raunchy but fun. bright colors, flying spangles and the occasional blood letting makes this something to remember outside of the humdrum cocktail scenario that most people find themselves in line for every weekend. for those who are not too high brow for low brow, it’s a must see show! hey, i enjoy the theatre too but nothing is more theatrical and over the top than LUCHA VA VOOM!

hammer pants!….

93l0994_60_a2…yes, that’s right! i’m going to tackle the subject of harem pants today. why? normally i could care less to comment on fashion as i feel that personal taste is pretty subjective, but harem pants have been taking such a beating on blogs across the web that i felt like i had to take a stand for them. i saw them two years ago in barcelona and could not get my mind off of them. yeah, they’re comfy, yada yada yada but, they can also be flattering. yes, i said it! flattering. this isn’t the eighties although you couldn’t tell by the looks on the spring runway and yet the cuts are fresher and more sophisticated this second time around. they are doing harem pants in a variety of cuts and fabrications that can be rocked by those with nerve. case in point: and no, don’t hate. she looks good! i even hated those crazy ass shoes she was wearing initially and then i saw the look head to toe and was grudgingly okay with those too…for her. me, i’m going to rock these with some little gold, mid heeled sandals and loop a couple of long simple gold chains. add a pair of sleek hoops and some large frame-less sunnies and i’m good to go. of course, the whole ethnic thing works on me… but! there are even more sedate versions that can give a twist to a prep look:elija2032112867_prod_zoom_front_v1_m56577569831374344 skinny clean tee and some well heeled pumps, pared down jewelry with a sleek updo and you’ve got clean, minimalist chic that’s fashion forward. of course i won’t deny that there are indeed some hideous interpretations of the harem that look like shit on a stick but don’t write them all off. just try a few pairs on and go with what works for your body type. i especially love the jumper by freepeople as i can slide it down into a longer pants version and in the california heat, i know i’ll be super comfy hitting up the occasional outdoor concert or beach side lounge (hello, bikini cover up). i read a post on a blog that bills themselves as “the fashion police” where a woman was reacting to the plethora of harem styles available for spring, wondering “where are all of the women stupid enough to buy these pants?” and i say, “stupid? no. casually chic? yes! and i look good” and so do so many other hotties with the nerve and know how! as much as she rants on about how hideous they are, even her own readers are beginning to warm up to the look and the variety of playful styles out in the market. all i can say, is don’t be swayed by other peoples opinions, get out there and try them for yourself because you may be surprised. if they’re not for you, then so be it but if they are, hold your head up and enjoy them! harem_jumpsuitimage4xl

and it’s done…

Inauguration A Nation Gathers…and it was a beautiful sight to behold! i can only hope this moment didn’t alienate anyone who may have been on the side of mccain and palin but in fact, puts all of the differences aside in an opportunity for us to roll up our sleeves and work together. despite republican or democrat, we need each other, all of us, in order to survive the ordeals ahead. and, fuck it, yes, i’m excited to see an african american in office! how could i not be? i’ll be excited to see a latin american, an asian american, a native american, a gay american or a woman or any other firsts for that matter because change is good! it brings new ideas and new perspective on the american way of life which is so vast and varied. every story is of importance and interest. what kind of world is it anyway when you can’t walk down the street without fear of violence because of who you are ? i have never met anyone whom even if i couldn’t respect, did not deserve the right to share this planet with each and everyone of us. i’ve not met anyone that i was so angry with that i felt violence was the answer. so i watch this parade in admittedly fear, in fear that a camera could be a gun, a grenade or a rifle. a shame that something of this magnitude could be tinged with the possibility of violence. that something so important and historic has to be viewed with my breath held, is so telling. i wish none of us had to feel that way. that none of us lived in fear of being ourselves…p.s. thank you for including us “non-believers”!…

nagi noda…

nagi_noda_uniqlo_2…andrew just sent me this link to one of her short films. nutty little short yes, but more interesting is her work found here at nagi noda. her editorial work is very interesting and there is no doubt that she was a very talented art director with an eccentric sensibility. in particular anything found under the “works” section is very amusing. my personal favorites are her “hair hats”. unfortunately she passed away in september 08. rip. it hurts my heart…

…to see what’s happening in oakland with the murder of oscar grant and to see a picture in the san francisco gate of the little boy i helped to raise now grown up and tackling protesters as a police officer. i know him and i know where his heart is and in any other circumstances, it could have been him on that train platform. he is a large man, easily six foot four and an ex-college football player. intimidating isn’t a word i would ascribe to him having changed those diapers and seen that sweet smile but i can step outside of myself and see him as others would. the uniform and badge make it worse. my uncle is a police officer too. again, one of the most gentlest, even tempered people i know. he quit the l.a. force when he saw the amount of corruption going on and only went back to active duty at the airport. i’ve been on the other side of the baton and cuffs. i’ve been baited by officers and my heart shatters every time i replay that video of grant’s death in my head. i know what it’s like to harden my heart against the police, the mistrust and avoidance and then i see this picture of my child (as close as i’ve ever been to my own) and i just weep because i know who he is, the husband he is, the father he is and i imagine the father grant was and the senselessness of it all is so overwhelming. because of one man’s stupidity, another man’s life is lost and now people that i know and love are in danger as well and i can see the escalation on both sides and know that i can’t convince anyone to back down.
